I am so excited to share with you all this great news! One of my photographs was featured on a group on Deviant Art!

I’ve been a member on Deviant Art since 2005, but had a dead period between 2007 and 2011. I’ve recently (in the past few months/half year) returned back to DA (Deviant Art) and have made an effort to showcase my work there. I uploaded a few pictures and joined a few groups and slowly my stats have been climbing! I was thrilled when it showed that 25 people had seen my page in one day alone! I don’t think I have that many viewers or readers anywhere! I logged in this morning and to my surprise saw that two groups (#PedalingTillTheEnd and #Its-A-Snap ) that I had no prior knowledge about requested to add my work to their group galleries!

I still can’t believe I was featured!

I am so excited and honored that my work was chosen to be added to both groups. Here is the larger version of the picture for your viewing pleasure:

Edit: I just went on DA to link this image, and I have 82 views today alone!

Also, I’m sorry that I’ve been neglecting this site/blog and haven’t been using this URL to its full potential but I’m not too happy with the layout at my IT people are in the states and since I’m in Germany still it makes it impossible to meet up with them!

The past two days for me have been eye opening, the world around all of us is changing- Dictators are falling, wars are ending. Where this will lead us, we do not yet know.

The following is the original caption on my facebook, I copied and pasted it here.

“Do you know more about what is on your friend feed, or what is trending on your twitter account then what is happening around you?

It is time to re-evaluate our priorities, the world is changing around us in ways that our generation has never before experienced.
Change may not always be good, but it is a fact of life and it is our duty to be well informed. Enjoy your facebook, twitter, etc but at the end of the day spend a few minutes educating yourself about the world around you.

Be informed.”

It is our responsibility to do this, excuses of the lack of time, or of not wanting to “hear sad stories” are not excuses, we owe it to our future to be well informed civilians and citizens.

The World is bigger than your social networking

I have posted this on my facebook, my flikr and my deviant art to spread my thoughts, and implore you to educate yourself.

As many of you know I am currently living abroad in Germany. I am trying to keep up with my photography and while I haven’t had much time to go out and take pictures ‘artsy’ I have made progress in editing, organizing and uploading pictures– even if I still have so much to do!

I grew up in the typical suburban community with all the amenities a planned community can offer, however my contact with real wilderness was limited to my imagination on manicured lawns and parks. I am currently living in a small village in northern Germany, in the middle of forests and agricultural fields. When ‘Oma’ came to visit I asked her to take me mushroom hunting, she acquiesced to my whimsical request and a few days later we set off in search of  edible mushrooms, specifically Stein Pilz- rock mushrooms. While we found several Stein Pilzs, we were beaten in our quest by wild boars which left their tracks in the forest. None the less, I was armed with my camera and was able to photograph a great variety of mushrooms.

Concept shoot: The Judgment of Paris/Judgement of Women

Posted on Aug 23 2011 by admin

This post is very much overdo and has been sitting in the “draft” stages for longer than I can remember simply becuase I have not known how to introduce it. It seems that I have found my introduction in the form of an apology for the delay and a thank you to my volunteers.

Some back story…

While traveling in 2009 I came across a few paintings depicting the Greek mythology of The Judgment of Paris. I was captivated by the  idea and concocted an idea to create my own modern interpretation of the scene.  The idea floated around in my mind for a few months until it was brought to life in September 2009 with the help of some friends.

I decided to represent each Goddess as “updated classics”: the Goddess of War Athena wears a standard issue military cap instead of a gilded helmet, as the Goddess of war and wisdom her accouterments are:  classic books, a beanie baby owl, and an AK47 airsoft gun. Hera, the wife of Zeus wears the pointed diadem which marks her stature, she holds a peacock fan as peacocks were connected to her as were pomegranates for fertility–a bottle of POM juice is an updated take on fruit. Aprodite, the sensual Goddess of love is laced up in a tight fighting corset, her luscious curls fall over her torso as she gazes into her mirror, a symobol of vanity. Her wrists are adorned by bracelets created by her legal husband, the God of the Forge.  Paris takes a secondary role to the Goddess and his main accessory is the coveted golden apple.

A few months later this idea of a simple reconstruction morphed into a new creation of its own. I submitted my photographs for an art conference in Philadelphia on the theme of Redemption. With the help of Athena Spencer, a bright and intelligent woman who I am proud to call my friend we crafted a proposal for my work.

(excerpt follows)

“…It is my intention to demonstrate how women place themselves in a paradoxical situation, where they must raise themselves up as “goddesses,” confident in their appeal and prowess, but then sacrifice their self-worth into the hands of a mortal man, whose only qualification is beauty and youth. Therefore, the focus of the work was to place the goddesses as women vying for the approval of a male, and the “golden apple” he can give them as the metaphor of purchasing status and approval. The gifts that the goddesses’ of the myth offer Paris far outweigh the real value of the Golden Apple, which in and of  itself has no value to the goddess, but what the apple represents—the title of the most beautiful, the most worthy. The goddesses must redeem their own positions as goddesses, and “buy back” their honor, and their status…All of this is meant to illustrate the mythology, and modern mentality, that place women as objects to be judged by men. I have not offered any solutions, nor have I tried to change the attitude of the goddesses. It is my wish to show the reality of the myth, the judgment of women, in a way that echoes the old masters of classical mythology recreation..”

Unfortunately the amount of entries received succeeded the allocated positions for exhibits and I was unable to exhibit my work. I however, am thankful for the learning experience that this opportunity provided and I hope to submit my work in future exhibits and conferences. Thank you once again to everyone that helped bring this creation to life, my models and my editors

I used to love playing with Barbies when I was a child, and I always wove intricate storylines for my characters. I remember always being in love with the clothes and the shoes and would often wish I could be shrunk down with a machine ala “Honey I shrunk the kids” so that I could fit into the beautiful (and I now realize cheaply made) outfits and then be “resized” to normal with my newly acquired clothing.

Last week Clarissa and I were playing Barbies in her room, wherein an idea crawled into my head when I saw her collection of Barbie accessories. I don’t know if its a symbol of changing times and society’s acceptance of overt sexuality or if I am becoming an old lady becuase I was floored by the innuendos of Barbie’s accessories– her “hooker shoes” to fishnet thigh highs.

My Barbie never had shoes like these!

I don’t why, but while I love taking pictures it takes me forever to actually edit and upload images. Here is a small sampling of what my computer has been hoarding.

I first learned about Sister Speak in the fall of 2009, when my friend Staci and I were visiting a local pub. Sister Speak was the music that night and their music was something that really spoke to me. We exchanged contact information and had our first photo shoot a few months later, which was unfortunately cut short because of the waning sunlight, early this year we reunited for our second photo shoot, which included their new member Lisa Viegas.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and leave your comments :)

________

Unfortunately I am still having some technical difficulties with the images, and as with Staci’s images, the rest of the set has been uploaded to flikr. Thanks!

First Photo upload: Staci Lovett 2009

The honor of the first photo load on my new website goes to one of my closest and dearest friends Staci Lovett- Jackson (She actually married last year in June, and her last name is now officially Jackson, but to me she will always be Lovett) whom I have known since the 7th grade when we were introduced by a mutual friend and bonded over our social awkwardness. Thanks for being in my life Staci <3

These pictures were taken by yours truly, in October of 2009 for Staci’s senior portraits. Staci graduated Point Loma Nazerene University with a Bachelors in International Studies (she is looking for a job in non profit if anyone has any ins :P) and is currently living in Kansas with her husband.

EDIT: Unfortunately there seems to be something wrong with my settings that I can’t figure out, I keep getting Error 500/data does not exist notices which makes me unable to insert thumbnails or directly to link to another image host, thus making the process of uploading one image at a time at full size then having to manually rescale extremely tedious. I am determined to get these pictures uploaded for for now I will manually upload 2 and link a few to flikr. Thank you and my apologies.

See the rest of Staci’s set here!
